Personal Guardians - the protector, the keeper This Advanced class is for students with hand-building skills and knowledge of the figure. Using hand-building skills, students will create a personal guardian. A discussion within the class will open students to different thoughts and reactions to the term "guardian" Each student will construct their guardian and develop the surface with mark making, symbolism, and colorants such as slips and underglazes.

A quote (I think by John Cage) hangs in my studio –

“When you start working – everybody is in your studio . . . the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your own ideas. But as you continue – they start leaving – one by one, and you are left completely alone. Then if you’re lucky, even you leave.?

I have been quiet for hours, days, months – allowing myself to create what is difficult to communicate: the self and relationships; the importance of our past to join the present; and the need for personal play.

Each sculpture is hand built – mainly using thick coils, then multi-fired. The pieces may be fired three to seven times – depending on the colors and surface I am trying to achieve.

I approach color on the clay as a painter. My palette is a combination of stains, glazes, oxides, slips, dry clays, underglazes and underglaze pencils. I mix – I paint – never exactly sure of the end result. I enjoy the surprises!
